Free Tips on Planning a Fun Trip around New Jersey for the Whole Family

Garden State is where people “go down to the shore” if they wanted to enjoy a vibrant beachside vacation with their families. The boardwalks are always abuzz with a flurry of activities, its streets lined with arcades and amusement centers. What the trip will be about diving into the delicious world of maple butter twists, mini cinnamon rolls, bagels, pizza, pastrami and submarine sandwiches (hoagies, fine) and then tackle hundreds of rides at parks along Jersey Shore. We know people from all around NJ, NY, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland who make day trips to the boardwalks and nightspots in Garden State on holidays.

Thanks to its picturesque backdrop and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and unique neighborhoods, the filming of Jersey Shore, Beach House music video, two episodes of True Life filmed, and The Real Housewives of New Jersey took place in Seaside Heights and parts of NJ.

If you’re planning a short 3-day stay to such a fun, adventurous state, here are places to consider. By all means, add and subtract on your own. No list and no suggested itinerary is perfect, so, this is just something I reckon you would like to do too. So, customize as you go along and have a blast during your New Jersey vacation!

Day One – Out and About in Perth Amboy and Staten Island

Great for getaways from the bustling city center, Perth Amboy is an ancient-like little town, considered by many a watering hole with many quiet summer retreat options. Its historic waterfront has gone through a few revitalizations efforts and has developed as a resort town for the Raritan Bayshore area starting around the 1990s. It has pebbled walkways reminiscent of Old England and naturally transports its park-filled neighborhoods and hillside gardens into another time and place.

Amplified by a large number of restored and preserved Victorian homes, it attracts people of rich, antiquarian taste. One of the last remaining first-settled cities in New Jersey with a marina and culture surrounding water and seafood, people would also make their way to the city for events like Concerts by the Bay, Mayor’s Concert Series at Bayview Park, and the Waterfront Art Festival. Here, trips to the oldest yacht club in the country, The Raritan Yacht Club, is a norm.

Prized as one of the local’s highest operatic achievements, The Princeton Festival is a 4-day event that has won over the hearts of the Jersey Arts Organization and The New York Times. Its highly-rated endeavors are always rave-worthy and easily bagged the People’s Choice Award for past notable productions like Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, Handel’s Ariodante, The Rake’s Progress, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

The premier performing arts festival offers eight different types of performing styles, having evolved from its more meager and conservative lineup of the past, and it boldly features both nationally renowned and aspiring artists in its productions today.

The 2018 summer event is anchored by A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and Madama Butterfly, as well as a raconteur show backed by The Metropolitan Opera. Although the main event of the festival will take place at McCarter Theater Center, the stages at Peter and Will Anderson Quintet will be taken up by the likes of Concordia Chamber Players, Baroque Choral, piano recitals, instrumental concerts, competitions, 15 free lectures, master classes, previews and workshops creating a splash in the music scene throughout the pristine town of Princeton.

During its early years, it was a small program launched by its founder, Richard Tang Yuk; today, it has a longer tentacle-reach effect.

Five Fun Facts to Help you Cherish Everything that New Jersey has to Offer

by Dawn Morris

While it is plain as day that New Jerseyans have it good when it comes to beaches to bum in, a head-turning number of restaurants and diners to hang out in, and a diverse culture that will intrigue both historians and foodies alike, people who are born and bred in New Jersey are raised to be proud of their unique people, exciting sports scene and gorgeous scenery that deserves a snap on your Instagram and Pinterest.

There are well over 75 resort cities and historical sites strewn strategically throughout Garden State, some more common, others more off-the-map. There’s really no apple-to-apple comparison when it comes to deciding on your tour trajectory in NJ. They are all capable of raining on you a cascade of surprises in their own ways. The ever-famous Jersey Shore is a must, minutes away from east of Manhattan and Philadelphia, lets you both kick back and relive the history of the country and state. The words of a local ring true in that he said that ‘there’s no pulling a fast one on the people of New Jersey’. They know what their laser focus should be on and they will do everything within their power to achieve it – work or play.

With the following few facts, we’ll take you through a short list of things you can expect from New Jersey – from shopping to beaches, ‘useless’ fun facts and, of course, its close proximity to Manhattan.

1. Diner Dynamite

Wikipedia can tell you that New Jersey is best for its corn, blueberries, and tomatoes, but that did very little to earn it the title of ‘Diner Capital of the World’. Thanks to the insatiable desire for variety and a taste for adventure that sees Garden State having more than 520 diners. Variety, in fact, in the name of the game although you might have come to know of the fact that it is home to Taylor Ham, or now better known as Pork Roll. The dish was the brainchild of John Taylor of Hamilton Square and it grew so popular that the Inaugural Pork Roll Festival was held in Trenton in 2014.

While Italian restaurants can be found at almost every office block corner downtown, everyone has his or her favorite diner to pop by for a chow down. It’s simply too easy to pick your favorite although most would offer the staple of burgers, club sandwiches, mashed potatoes, pancakes, tuna fish, fries, egg white omelets, salads, onion rings, and pasta. Diners in New Jersey have extensive menus that list everything from the common to the never-ordered items, complete with a separate kids’ menu doubling up as a color-book-playmat. If you fancy something out-of-the-ordinary, just ask the wait staff at the counter to have a look at the refrigerator display behind the counter. It is sometimes packed with simple delights like Jell-O, Oreo cheesecakes or tapioca pudding.

Even when you’re taking a romantic walk along the boardwalk, you’ll find something for your everyday guilty pleasures. So, keep your eye out for diners or trucks selling their best version of subs, hoagies or heroes when hunger strikes because the best NJ food could be just a hop and skip away.

Roll Up Your Sleeves, Pick Your Own Fruits At These New Jersey Orchards

by Dawn Morris

Many traditional orchards and farms in New Jersey experience roaring successes back in the days, and they are naturally passed onto the next generation, and then the next. Suffice to say, many of them remain in the family and the families continue to offer amazing opportunities for families and students to pick their own apples, berries, corn, pumpkins or jump on a hayride. The farms, therefore, are packed with personality, something you don’t really get to see when you are traversing the big cities in New Jersey.

Not only will visitors get to step into the shoes of a real-life farm hand just for the day, but they will also get to enjoy an educational tour which will give them important points to ponder. Although a little off the map, they’re not too far off, with the help of a New Jersey charter bus, from most NJ big cities like Newark, Jersey City, Princeton, Trenton and Atlantic City. Hop onto the New Jersey rented charter bus and you would only be an hour or so away from the biggest, baddest orchard. With spring around the corner, and summer not too off in the distance, schedule some time to learn about the pruning process, cider-making, growing and harvesting fruits like apples, strawberries, blackberries, pumpkins, sweet corn and peaches at the following top orchards in the state of New Jersey!

You’ll be rained on by streams of surprises along the way, regardless of your age and preference.

The farm has been around since 1908 and it has been with the Applegate family for four generations and counting. In Freehold, NJ, the farm is located approximately an hour’s drive away from Newark, Jersey City, and slightly nearer to Princeton, NJ. It’s time to make the kids put their phones down, away from their devices, and out into the vastness of Garden State where they can spend the day picking their own fruits and vegetables. Although the events held at the orchard and farm are understandably seasonal, the country store, however, remains open all year round.

Apart from offering the best fruits of labor from the farm itself, the affordable and delicious fresh pressed cider and irresistible donuts never fail to score a touchdown! When you’re done with apple-picking and taking on hayrides, grab mouth-watering bread and pies home with you. After spending the day running around and picking their own fruits, everyone can tally up at the end to see who had the best harvest…and then bring them home to share with their family and friends.
